Microaggressions are "invisible" perspectives in daily life, whether unconscious or perceived as friendly or humorous by the speaker, which may cause discomfort to the listener. For example, Asian students are often asked by others for help with math, implying the stereotype that "Asian students must be good at math." Similarly, non-heterosexual individuals are often kindly reminded, "The environment is already very friendly to homosexuals now, you can come out!" — being labeled makes people uncomfortable, yet they don't know how to remove the tiny needles in these words. Such situations represent one aspect of microaggressions.
Frequent experiences of microaggressions can have negative effects on mental and physical health. Moreover, the insufficient awareness of microaggressions in today's society further pushes those affected by microaggressions into a state of speechlessness.
❝Have you ever experienced microaggressions?❞
❝Have you ever wanted to try to narrate your experiences, so that society can better understand the experiences and feelings of those affected by microaggressions?❞
Hello, everyone! We are students of the Department of Social Work who are taking the "Program Design and Evaluation" course taught by Professor Yang Peishan. If you have ever experienced or are currently experiencing such difficulties, and you also wish to try to narrate your own experiences or hope to promote a better understanding of the "microaggression issue," you are welcome to join this workshop. We hope to provide a friendly, safe space and, through language, writing, drawing, and other methods, to collectively sort through our own experiences, recover from trauma narratives, and develop a gentle yet firm power to combat microaggressions through "creation."
